' Precis' is a French word which means 'Precise'. It was used to mean the exact summary in a very brief form. In fact, it is the substance of a substance, embodying only the most essential points of a passage in a logical and coherent form. Precise may be of two kinds - literary and commercial .
How to write a precis :
The following guidelines be followed while writing down the precis of a passage :
(a) The precis should contain all the main ideas of the original passage should not size be more than one-third of it.
(b) All comments and personal remarks should be avoided.
(c) A suitable title to the precis should be added.
There are some rules of precis writing:
(a) Read the passage thoroughly and carefully three or four times to understand the plain meaning of the passage as a whole.
(b) Find out whether the given passage is narrative, descriptive, or reflective. If it is narrative, get down the essential points of the narrative. Proceed likewise if the passage is descriptive or reflective.
(c) Get down the main points in the original passage.
(d) Write in simple English and omit all figures of speech, repetition, direct narration, phrases and idioms.
(e) Always use third person and the indirect form of narration. In extreme cases, use only the first person plural i.e., 'we'. Never use ' I '.
(f) Go through the draft precis and conform it to prescribed length.
(g) Find out the key sentence of the passage. It may be a maxim or proverb or a catchy phrase. It may be in the beginning, in the middle or at the end of the passage. Use it as a title if it is found appropriate.

Precis লিখাৰ নিয়মবোৰ হৈছে -
(ক) Precis টো মনযোগসহকাৰে আৰু সতৰ্কতাৰে কমেও তিনি-চাৰিবাৰ পঢ়িব লাগিব ৷ Passage টোৰ সৰল অৰ্থখিনি বুজিবৰ কাৰণে এইটো এটা প্ৰয়োজনীয় কথা ৷
(খ) Passage টোৰ পঢ়াৰ পিছত কি ধৰণৰ - এইটো narrative ( আখ্যানমূলক), descriptive ( বৰ্ণনামূলক) নে reflective ( চিন্তামূলক ) বিচাৰ কৰি চাব লাগিব ৷ যদি আখ্যানমূলক হয়, তেনেহ'লে আখ্যান বা কাহিনীৰ প্ৰধান Point বোৰ লিখি ল'ব লাগিব ; ঠিক তেনেকৈ descriptive আৰু narrative passage ৰ ক্ষেত্ৰত তেনেকৈ লিখি ল'ব লাগিব ৷
(গ) মূল Passage ৰ প্ৰধান point বোৰ উলিয়াই ল'ব লাগিব ৷
(ঘ) সৰল বা Simple ইংৰাজীত লিখিব লাগিব আৰু সকলো ধৰণৰ বাক্যঅলংকাৰ , পুনৰাবৃত্তি , প্ৰত্যক্ষ্যউক্তি, খণ্ডবাক্য ( Phrases আৰু Idioms) - এইবোৰৰ ব্যৱহাৰ কৰিব নোৱাৰিব ৷
(ঙ) Third Person আৰু পৰোক্ষ উক্তি ব্যৱহাৰ কৰিব লাগিব; কেৱল মাথোন একেবাৰে নোৱাৰা ক্ষেত্ৰতে First Person Plural Number অৰ্থাৎ 'We' ব্যৱহাৰ কৰিব পাৰি ৷ কিন্তু কেতিয়াও " I" (মই) ব্যৱহাৰ কৰিব নোৱাৰিবা ৷
(চ) Draft Precis - টো ভালকৈ পঢ়ি ইয়াক নিৰ্দিষ্ট শব্দসীমাৰ ভিতৰত অনাৰ কাৰণে চেষ্টা কৰিব লাগিব ৷
(ছ) Passage টোত এটা সূত্ৰ বাক্য বা Key Sentence থাকিব পাৰে ৷ এইটো হয় উপদেশবাক্য বা এটা প্ৰবচন বাক্য নাইবা এটা আকৰ্ষণীয় খণ্ডবাক্য ( Pharse ) হ'ব পাৰে ৷ এই বাক্যটো Passage টোৰ প্ৰথমতে বা মাজত নাইবা শেষৰ অংশত থাকিব পাৰে ৷ যদি উপযুক্ত বুলি ভাবা, তেনেহ'লে এই বাক্যটোক Precis ৰ Title হিচাপে ব্যৱহাৰ কৰিব পাৰিবা ৷
(ছ) এতিয়া Precis টোৰ এটা Fair Copy বনোৱা আৰু আগৰ draft Precis টো "X" চিন দি কাটি পেলাব লাগিব ৷
